December 2017 Meeting

This was the December meeting of the Craobh Eo woodturning year and was held on Thurs December 14th, 2017 in the Craobh Eo Centre in Aghamore.

Our Secretary, Michael Horkan was our demonstrator for the evening.

Michael decided to have a Christmas theme to his demo and turned a couple of baubles during the evening.

He started with and inside outside bauble and mounted a blank of alternate ash and mahogany pieces which he turned to a concave shape which completed the “inside” part of the bauble. He explained that the next step was to split out the four sections and turn them back to front and glue them back together again. This is then left for glue to dry out properly.

Michael then mounted a prepared “outside” blank and roughed it to a cylinder. He had a handout with the shape of the final bauble and he turned the bauble to these dimensions. See photos below.

The second project consisted of shaping a blank to a cylinder before turning down to a bauble shape in preparation for some design work. He marked out the bauble and burnt the lines with a wire to highlight them. He used a wood burning pen to cut in the horizontal lines. Finally he coloured in the areas with Tombow markers. This is a great idea and gives plenty of scope for design. See photos below.

The annual dinner will take place on Friday 15th Dec in the Western Hotel, Claremorris. Our charity for this year is the Kidney Association of Ireland and donations will be made at this event.
