Yann Marot Nov 2013

We were privilaged to have Yann Marot come to visit us at the Craobh Eo centre on Sat 16th Nov.

Those in attendance were witness to one of the finest woodturners of our era and it was a pleasure to be there. During this seminar he worked mostly without sandpaper and achieved finishes by tooling that most of us could only dream of.

He warmed up at the start of the day by turning a ladle, spindle and small bowl.

In the late morning session he turned a beaded bowl. Se story below in pictures. Here he demonstrated his mastery of tooling and also showed us how to sharpen properly. The key to this is getting the bevel rubbing on the stone like you would when turning wood. He urged us to strive for better finishing with our tools so as to reduce the need for sanding. Think of the health benefits.

After lunch he completed an ambitious teardrop box. This was shaped first, then textured and finally had a ring inserted. The photos below follow the sequence but what you can’t see is the quality of finish he gets with his tools.

The final session saw Yann do some off-centre turning to whet our appetites for what we can expect if we visit him in France next year at the school he is setting up with Jean-Francois Escoulen.

Thank you Yan for a very enjoyable day.
