April 2024 Meeting

The April meeting of the CraobhEo 2023/24 year took place on Thursday the 11th April in the CraobhEo Centre in Aghamore.

Our demonstrator for the evening was Frank Fitzpatrick from the Shannonside Chapter and Journal editor.

Frank’s project was a utility box with the lid turned off centre made from ash.

Mount blank for body, approx. 80 mm by 50 mm, turn to a cylinder with a spigot for the chuck. Remount in chuck, true up and hollow out centre to depth of 35 mm leaving a wall of 10 mm. Finish inside with round skew. Turn a 10 mm hole right  through the base (part of the lid for later). Sand using sandpaper soaked in liquid paraffin or mineral oil. Take measurement for the bottom to be turned next.

Attach an 80 mm by approx 7 mm blank for bottom to a round wooden faceplate using Mammoth double sided tape and clean up the face. Transfer width of body onto blank, turn it to this width and sand face.

Remount body and turn recess to receive bottom, 6 mm deep. Fit bottom to body, leaving space for glue. Apply glue and clamp bottom to body. Finish the attached bottom, leave it slightly concave. Use Formica to burn a mark to disguise joint.

Next mount the body for off centre turning using the Ruth Niles jig. It will be centred to start and tidy up the top of the box. Set the jig up in the off centre position (no 2 here) and turn recess for the lid.

Finally, mount a blank for the lid. Round up with tenon and mount in chuck. Turn and fit lid.

Thank you Frank for making the journey from Mullingar to be with us on the night. You are always so welcome in Mayo. A very well thought out and delivered demo to leave us wanting to head to the workshop and have a go.

Chapter Competition

Competition for April was a clock.

There was advanced competition and an intermediate competition for turners up to three years experience.

Frank Fitzpatrick judged both competitions and gave a critique afterwards on pieces from both competitions. Frank commented on the standard and how difficult it was to pick a winner. Thanks to Frank and to all who took part in the competitions.

Competition for May is an off centre piece.
