June 2025 Meeting

The June meeting of the CraobhEo 2024/25 year took place on Thursday the 12th June in the CraobhEo Centre in Aghamore.
Our demonstrator for the evening was Wille Creighton.
First, he gave a talk on health and safety. He followed this up with a tutorial on lathe maintenance.
He mounted a 340 mm by 44 mm blank on the lathe. Willie explained that this needs a large chuck with 100 mm jaws so that there will be no vibrating when removing the inside.
Turn the base first and leave a 100 mm by 3 mm recess at bottom to accommodate the chuck when turning the top. Diameter of the base is 125 mm. Turn the base to an ogee shape and a 9 mm bead with a cove on the outer rim. In this case, the finish is off the tool so no sanding done. However, it can be sanded if preferred.
Remount the blank (as discussed above) and turn the inside of the platter. Turn a 40 mm rim with a 9 mm bead and 3 mm fillet curved into the centre. No sanding as discussed above. The rim is textured using the Sorby texturing tool.
Willie rounded off the evening with a spindle tutorial to remind both beginners and experienced turners that there is always a lot to learn.
As can be seen from the accompanying photos, this was a lovely platter that would adorn and table. Thank you Willie for standing in at short notice again and well done on an excellent demo.
Chapter Competition
Competition for June was the finished bowl from the October competition.
There was advanced competition and an intermediate competition for turners up to three years experience.
Willie Creighton judged the competitions and gave a critique on the pieces afterwards. He complimented all who turned their bowl wet for October, dried it during the year and finished it for June. Thanks to Willie and to all who took part in both competitions for June and throughout the year.
The winners of the overall competition for the year were also announced.
Competition for September is a piece of your choice.
