May 2023 Meeting

The May meeting of the CraobhEo 2022/23 year took place on the 11th May in the CraobhEo Centre in Aghamore.

Our demonstrator for the evening was Arthur Cumiskey from the Shannonside Chapter.

Arthur started with an discussion on spalted beech. He showed us some examples of lamps and bowls he brought with him made from beautiful woods.

Project for the evening was a lamp.

First up, mount a spalted beech blank for the base, round it up and prepare a recess for the chuck on the bottom. Turn decorative cuts on the bottom and sand. Remount and shape the top of the base to your preferred design. Drill a hole to accommodate the power cord. Turn or drill recess for body of lamp to fit into.

Next mount a sycamore blank for body between centres, round up and turn spigot on both ends for chuck. Remount and drill hole for power cord working from both ends towards centre. Use silicone spray to smooth drilling process. Turn spigot for body to fit into base. Mark out preferred design and turn the body. In this case a sphere at the bottom with a globe shape on top. Finish by sanding.

It was wonderful to have Arthur back again in Mayo. He puts a lot of thought into design and shapes and this comes across in his work. Thank you for a lovely demo.

Chapter Competition

Competition for May was a piece from mixed materials.

Arthur Cumiskey and Paddy Courtney (Shannonside) judged the competition. Paddy critiqued each piece and was impressed with the high standard of the entries on display. Our appreciation to you both.

Thanks to all who took part in the May competition.

Competition for June is a table lamp.
